Last Sunday, the 5th of November, several Sydney University Fencing Club members competed at the Club Teams State Championship. Everyone fenced hard and several teams featured on the podium.

SUFC Men's Epee team
The SUFC Men's Epee team (L to R): Marvin Song, Chris Gemell, Zier Gascoigne and Lionel De Swarte-Danko.

The Women’s Epee team (Sara Scott and Marina Carrier of SUFC, as well as Grace White of Marrickville Marauders), the Women’s Foil team (Katherine Kwa and Gracie Amilbangsa of SUFC and Rosa Dyson of UTS) and the truly composite Men’s Foil team (Lionel De Swarte-Danko of SUFC, Mark Morris of FAA and Edward Bridge from Newcastle PCYC) all ended up in second place in their respective competitions, taking home well-earned silver medals.

The only gold of the day won by SUFC was in the Men’s Epee, from our only team made up entirely of SUFC representatives. Marvin Song, Lionel De Swarte-Danko, Zier Gascoigne and Chris Gemell faced the largest field on the day with 7 teams, including a team with fencers over from China. After going undefeated in their pool, the SUFC team fenced against the Chinese team for the gold medal. The victory made Sydney University Fencing Club the Men's Epee Club Teams State Champions for the first time since 2009.

Congratulations to all the teams for an excellent performance on the day!
